dog whistle 「隠されたメッセージ」＋ get off の恐ろしい意味 [ニュースと英語]
人間には聞こえない音を使って犬を呼ぶ笛に由来する dog whistle はイディオム集か何かの本で知ったが、これまで印象に残る実例に接したことがなかった。しかしウェブの記事を読んでいたら、この表現が使われた興味深いニュースがあった。
マレーシアの格安航空会社がブリズベーン（オーストラリア）～バンコク間の直行便を宣伝したところ、そのキャッチフレーズが「タイでの買春ツアーをあおっている」という抗議にさらされた、というものだ。
BBCの記事で最初に知ったが、何が起きたかはわかったものの、なぜこれが批判を浴びるのかわからなかった。それを知りたいと検索して見つけた他の記事のいくつかに今回の表現が使われていた。
その部分を引用しよう（先の疑問に対する答えは書かれていないが）。

あらためて手持ちの辞書を引いたが、dog whistle は載っていないか、あっても「犬笛」としか書いていない。オンラインの辞書も載せているものは少なかったが、例外として、
- 1 A high-pitched whistle used to train dogs, typically having a sound inaudible to humans.
1.1 usually as modifier A subtly aimed political message which is intended for, and can only be understood by, a particular group.

つまり「わかる人にはわかる表現」「わかる人でないと本当の意味が何なのかわからない言葉」ということになる。上記の定義だと政治について使われる表現という印象を持つが、今回の実例は、もうちょっと広く使われうることを示しているといえそうだ。
しかしわからないのは Get off in Thailand. という謳い文句が、なぜこれまでの反応を呼び起こしたのかだ。このニュースはいろいろな英文メディアで報じられていたが、それをはっきりと書いているものは見つからなかった。
読者のコメントがつけられる記事もあったが、「とんでもない広告だ」から「考えすぎだ」まで、さまざまな見方が寄せられていた。しかし、なにせ航空会社が誤解を与えたと謝罪して引っ込めたほどだから、よほどの言葉なのだろう。
・・・いや、もちろん想像はつくのだ。スラングとして”そちら”系の意味を持っている、そして、それがタイという国が持つ悲しい一面と結びついて、ことさらそう感じられてしまうということではなかろうか。それを確かめるために、こうした言葉に詳しいオンラインの Urban Dictionary を調べてみたら・・・。
いやはや驚いた。ここでは書かないことにするが、get off にこんな意味があったとは！
私の想像が正しいとしてだが、ネイティブならこの広告を見たただけで、そうした意味を連想して激しく反応する人がいるとは。日本人なら中学生でも知っているこの表現、気づかないうちに誤解を与える形で使いかねないではないか。なんだか恐ろしいことである。
