elephant in the room 「みんなが見て見ぬふりをしている問題」 [単語・表現]
前回に続いて異文化理解についての本 The Culture Map から拾った表現を取りあげる。elephant in the room は字面を見るといったい何だと思うが、「明々白々なのに誰も触れたがらない問題」という意味である。

物事をはっきりと表現する言語文化を持つアメリカ人は、他の国の人たちが「言わぬが花」としてあえて黙っていることも口に出してしまう。そういう時こそアメリカ人の出番、アメリカ人におまかせ、というのであろう。機微に疎いというべきか、愛すべきおバカさんというべきか、というのは私の余計な感想だが。

由来はこの説明を読んでも何だかよくわからず、言葉についての下記サイト World Wide Words を見るとさらにいろいろな説が書かれており、「部屋の中のゾウ」はやっぱり謎である。またゾウでなくゴリラもあり、というのも凄いが、こちらも後日調べてみたい。

やっかいではありますが、少なくともアメリカ国内では、「見て見ぬふり」というより、大いに語られ、問題にされているように思えますね。
