holier-than-thou「エラそうな」「人を見下したような」

前回の braggadocio から連想した言葉として holier-than-thou について書いておきたい。thou は you の古語だが、現代英語の表現で目にするとしたら、この言葉くらいではないかと想像する。

また holier は holy の比較級である。そこで「お前さんよりオレの方が立派で高潔だ」とうぬぼれたような態度について使う。

「聖人ぶった」「独善的な」という訳をあげている英和辞典もあるが、宗教あるいは道徳的な文脈で使われるとも限らないようだ。

次は、アメリカ大統領選挙の前哨戦で、トランプ氏の対抗馬となる民主党の候補は誰かという記事で使われていた実例である。she とは当時有力と見られていたエリザベス・ウォーレン氏を指す。

- Several of her Senate colleagues — including allies — told me early on that she wouldn’t “wear well.” They dislike her “holier-than-thou” attitude. There’s a coldness to her that all the selfies with fans don’t quite overcome.

thou という古語が使われているので、由来は何か古いものだろうと想像したがその通りで、旧約聖書の欽定訳 King James Version によるイザヤ書の一節 "Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou." に基づくという。

そしてこの表現を応用した、比較級+than thou という言い方もある。ネットで見つけた実例を引用しよう。

- The humbler-than-thou game nonetheless favours candidates such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who often talks of his Cuban immigrant parents, his father a bartender, his mother a maid, and his own student debt.
