police blotter 「警察の事件記録簿」 [単語・表現]
前回の cold case が犯罪・事件がらみの言葉だった流れで、police blotter という表現を取り上げたい。発生した事件など毎日の出来事を綴る警察署の記録簿を指す。
といっても、日本の警察にはこれに相当する用語や、そもそもそうした記録簿があるのかどうか、警察には縁のない私にははっきりしない。むしろ、「捕物帳」とか「捕物控」という時代劇の言葉が頭に浮かんでしまった。
テレビから時代劇がまったく姿を消して久しいが、子供の時にそうしたドラマをさかんに見ていた私としては、何とも残念である。
いきなり脱線したが、自分の英語学習ノートにメモしていた実例を抜き書きしよう。これも昔の話、ビートルズが半世紀近く前にアメリカツアーを行った際の警備について取り上げたBBCの記事にあったものだ。

The records list the names of the officers who guarded the band in New York as they prepared to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964.
Detailed as the "visit of Beatles singing group", the handwritten police blotter lists Sergeants O'Shea, Jones and McAuliffe, with officers Delgado, De Angelo, Lucarelli and Madden among the NYPD detachment looking after the band.

なお blot は「しみ」「汚れ」、そして blotter はもともと、余分なインクを吸い取るための「吸い取り紙」のことである。私が子供の頃にはまだ使われていたが、今ではほとんど目にしなくなったようなので、何のことかわからない人も増えているだろう。
吸い取り紙が必要な生乾きのインクで書かれた、というイメージだろうか、blotter は転じて「出来事を正式な台帳に載せる前の臨時の記録簿」を指すようになったらしい。つまり「控えの帳簿」であり、その意味では「捕物控」はぴったりのような気がする。
英語圏のオンライン辞書から、blotter の記述を引用しよう。

テレビドラマの時代劇といえば、「お上」ながら悪を懲らしめる「水戸黄門」や、マンガチックな「必殺シリーズ」と並んで私がよく観ていたのが「銭形平次」だった。
派手派手しさには欠けるものの、主人公をはじめ庶民レベルの人物を描いていたのが好ましかったのだと想像する。銭形親分を長年演じた大川橋蔵が55歳の若さで亡くなった時は残念に思ったものだった。
野村胡堂の原作小説はその名も「銭形平次捕物控」で、時おり文庫で復刊されたりして、今でも忘れ去られてはいないようなのがうれしい。
