軽くはない straw さまざま~「がまんの限界」、「溺れるものはわらをも掴む」

次の国連事務総長に韓国のパン・ギムン外相が選ばれることが確実になったと前回書いたが、これは安全保障理事会が、数人の候補者について非公式投票を何回か繰り返した結果によるものだ。この投票を英語で straw poll [vote] と呼ぶのが面白い。

英英辞典には、an unofficial poll or vote used to discover the likely result of an election or the trend of opinion regarding an issue と意味が説明されている。しかし、なぜ straw なのだろうか。

これも面白いことに、辞書やサイトによって異なった説があった。

- from straw 'not having real authority' or 'insignificant thing'

- This idiom alludes to a straw used to show in what direction the wind blows, in this case the wind of public opinion.

２つめの方で連想するのが、a straw in the wind という表現だ。a slight fact that is an indication of a coming event ということで、個人的には、こちらの straw の意味の方が straw poll についてもしっくりくるように感じたが、本当はどちらなのだろうか。

straw について連想した表現にもうひとつ、the last straw あるいは the straw that breaks the camel's back がある。たとえわらであっても、これ以上載せると耐えられないという感じか、「がまんの限界」とか「これでもうダメ」、あるいは「わずかなことが大事に至る」といったような時に使われるようだ。

英英辞典には the last in a series of unpleasant events which finally makes you feel that you cannot continue to accept a bad situation などと説明されている。

もうひとつ、おなじみ「溺れるものはわらをも掴む」は A drowning man will clutch [catch] at a straw である。自分の以前の学習ファイルには、こんな例もメモしてあった。

The Princess had realized that she was in danger of becoming a straw to which the drowning Duchess might try to cling.

insignificant thing という意味もある straw だが、なかなかどうして、大切な役割を担っている。こうした表現を眺めていると、一方で馬鹿にはできないもの、という認識もあったのだろうか、と思いたくなる。
