マドンナで広まったwannabe [音楽と英語]
前回 has-been と might-have-been という表現について書いたが、動詞を他の動詞・助動詞とくっつけてできた、人を表す単語をもう少し見てみよう。こうした成り立ちの単語で、まずあげられるものといえば would-be だろうか。形容詞だけでなく名詞としても使える。

a would-be actor
- wanting or trying to be:
a would-be artist/politician
- unfulfilled of frustrated in realizing an ambition
Would-be film stars often become waitresses
- (n. plural would-bes) a person who wishes or pretends to be something:

The reception was attended by all the major candidates for office and other would-bes.
もうひとつあげたいのは wannabe (または wannabee) である。want to be から来ているのは一目瞭然だが、辞書を見ると hyphen はつかない。こちらの方は would-be と比べると、もう少し面白いニュアンスがあるようだ。
- INFORMAL a person who wants to be like someone else, esp. someone famous, or who wants to be thought of as famous
She's a pop singer wannabe.
- a person who is trying to achieve success or fame, usually unsuccessfully:
The bar is frequented by wannabe actresses and film directors.
- one who aspires, often vainly, to emulate another's success or attain eminence in some area.
- someone who wishes to be or do something, but lacks the qualifications or talent; an overeager amateur
The American Heritage Dictionary はさらに詳しい。
1. (Informal) One who aspires to a role or position.
2. One who imitates the behavior, customs, or dress of an admired person or group.
3. A product designed to imitate the qualities or characteristics of something.
この２つの単語、ネット辞書を見ても、would-be に often derogatory、また wannabe にも disapproving や derogatory と説明しているものがある。少なくとも、ちょっと揶揄するようなニュアンスが（特に後者には）あるということだろうか。
また辞書の語源情報によると、would-be は13世紀ごろから使われていたというが、wannabe はさすがに新しく、最初に使われたのは1981年という。次のような説明があった。
- 1981, originally Amer.Eng. surfer slang, from casual pronunciation of want to be; popularized c.1984 in reference to female fans of pop singer Madonna.
- The term was first used in a July 6, 1981 Newsweek article on surfing that described novice surfers crowding the beaches as wannabees (as in, ‘I wanna be a surfer’). The term was popularized by writer John Skow in a spring 1985 Time magazine on the pop star Madonna.Skow used the construction "Wanna Be's" to describe the avid fans who sought to dress, talk and act like their idol.
年は微妙に違っているが、マドンナがきっかけになって広まったということでは一致している。
マドンナは今も現役だが、デビューしたのは、ちょうど私が学生の時であり、やはりなつかしい。今はごく当たり前になったミュージックビデオ、プロモが盛んになった時期でもあった。このDVDでは、そうしたデビュー直後の単純な映像から、スーパースターとなってからの "Vogue" のように、とてつもなく凝った作品まで、映像制作の変化も楽しめる。
