「現象」としたくない phenomenon

先日読んだ "The Love You Make" の前半によく出てきた単語である。ビートルズが人気グループにのし上がっていく部分で使われていた。「現象」と聞くと私は物理的なものをイメージするせいか、この意味での phenomenon の訳に使うのは抵抗がある。しかし「ビートルズ現象」というような言葉も耳にするようになってきた。

辞書には「並外れた物」「驚くべき物[事]」「非凡な人、天才」「異才」などといった訳があげられている。「社会現象」とすれば抵抗は少なくなるだろうか。

英英辞典を見ると、

- a remarkable development
- extraordinary person or thing: somebody or something that is, or is considered to be, truly extraordinary and marvelous

などと定義されている。その事象や人物、文脈によっては、「大流行」「大評判」「大ブーム」「ブレイク」「旋風」など、いろいろふさわしい言葉を考えるのがいいかもしれない。

形容詞は phenomenal で、

- uncommon, outstanding, surpassing
- exceedingly or unbelievably great

などと定義されている。そういえば前回触れた "Meet the Beatles" のジャケットには "The First Album by England's Phenomenal Pop Combo" と書かれていることが写真からわかる。

ともあれ、今回読んだ本からの引用である。

- While the Beatles were one of the phenomena that launched the age of worldwide mass communication, the media were not nearly aggressive, intrusive, or powerful as they would become in the decades after the band's breakup n 1970.

- The Beatles were overnight the most talked about phenomenon in America.

- Here was a man whose passions had sparked an entertainment phenomenon, who had influenced the course of history, but the world would only remember his unhappiness and not the dreams that filled stadiums.　（ビートルズのマネージャー Brian Epstein についての記述）

なおこの単語、複数形は phenomena と phenomenons の双方があるが、アメリカ英語では今回あげた意味としては後者が使われることが多いという説明が辞書にあった。
