「乱闘」と「メドレー」との不思議なつながり

先日取りあげた battle royal とちょっと似た意味を持つ単語に melee がある。英和辞典には、「乱闘、混戦」、また「雑踏、混雑」と書かれている。その語源を見ていたら、ちょっと面白いことがわかった。

まず英英辞典でこの単語の定義と用例を見てみよう。

- a confused struggle; especially : a hand-to-hand fight among several people - a confused tumultuous mingling, as of a crowd:
the rush-hour melee.
- confusion; turmoil; jumble:
the melee of Christmas shopping.
- [C usually singular] LITERARY a large noisy uncontrolled crowd, in which people are moving in different directions and sometimes fighting with each other:

そして語源である。

1648, from Fr. mêlée, from O.Fr. meslee "confused fight, mixture," from fem. pp. of mesler "to mix, mingle" (see meddle). See also medley.

つまり、この単語は、meddle や medley と関係がありそうだということがわかる。 これらを Online Etymology Dictionary で調べてみると、

meddle
c.1290, "to mingle," from O.N.Fr. medler (O.Fr. mesler) "to mix, mingle, to meddle," from V.L. *misculare, from L. miscere "to mix" (see mix). Meaning "to concern oneself" (usually disparaging) is attested from 1415. From c.1340 to 1700, it also was a euphemism for "have sexual intercourse." Meddlesome is attested from 1615.

medley
c.1300, "hand-to-hand combat," from O.Fr. medlee, var. of meslee (see meddle). Meaning "combination, mixture" is from c.1440; that of "musical combination consisting of diverse parts" is from 1626.

つまり、これらの単語には medler, mesler といった共通の根があるらしい。

medley は、「メドレー」という日本語になっているので、音楽についてのイメージを強く持たれているのではないかと思うが、元は「乱闘」というような意味があったわけである。しかし今では、

- a mixture, esp. of heterogeneous elements; hodgepodge; jumble
- mixture of things: a mixture or assortment of various things
- a collection or mixture of complementary things: a fruit medley

- musical sequence of different songs: a continuous piece of music consisting of two or more different tunes or songs played one after the other
- (music) a collection of related songs played or mixed together as a single piece:
They played a medley of favorite folk songs as an encore.

という意味で使われるようになったというわけだ。

語彙増強の手段として、語源を利用する方法が提唱されている。どんな単語でも語源だけに頼って覚えるというわけにはいかないだろうが、今回取り上げた単語のようなつながりを知るのは、印象に残って記憶の一助にはなりそうである。
