「スムーズ」ではない smooth [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
少し前に医療サスペンス小説 "Gravity" を読んだ際に目にとまった単語や表現を見返して紹介しているが、今回は smooth talking について書いてみたい。次の例のように、smooth は、単なる「なめらかな」ではない場合があるので、ちょっと気をつけたい単語である。
英和辞典には、「円滑な」などの他に、「人当たりのよい」「気をそらさない」「お世辞のうまい」「口のうまい」と書かれている。状況によっては、ネガティブなニュアンスを帯びてくるわけである。
ついでに以前つくった学習ノートを見直したら、「口がうまい」にあたる表現として、このほか glib talker という言い回しがメモしてあった。この形容詞、辞書を見ると
と説明されている。語源は probably modification of Low German glibberig (slippery) ということだそうだ。
さらに連想した「甘い言葉」ということでは、sweet talk のほか、honeyed words という言い方が頭に浮かんだ。sugarcoated という形容詞もあり、日本語と似通っているのが面白い。あるいは、外国語の影響で「甘い」の意味が広がったのだろうか。

史記に「甘言好辞」という語が出てくるようです。日本語の「甘い言葉」はそこからきたのかもしれませんね。
