Artful Dodger と Slick Willie [固有名詞にちなむ表現]
辞書は引くだけでなく、読んでみるといろいろ面白い発見があるものだが、先日触れた "Art is long, life is short." にからんで、紙の辞書で art の前後を眺めていたら、artful dodger (または大文字で Artful Dodger) という面白い言葉があることを知った。
dodge は「ドッジボール」にもあるように、「～をかわす」「のがれる」「ごまかす」ということである。そこで、

私が使っている電子辞書に収録されている他の辞書では、

「ジーニアス」は「デビッド・コパフィールド」を出典としているが、他の辞書等を調べると、どうも誤りといえそうだ。
一方、電子辞書に収録されている英英辞典はどれもこの表現を載せていなかった。ディケンズの時代はいざしらず、今は使われない古臭い表現ということかと思ったが、ネットで検索すると結構ヒットがある。
ディケンズの小説からとはいえ、作中人物の固有名詞に由来するもの(eponym)ではないので、むしろ、出典を知らずとも意味を汲み取ることができる表現と考えたほうがいいのかもしれない。小文字での表記があるのも、その裏書きということであろうか。
次は、ビル・ゲイツについてのCNNの記事から。この部分だけでは文脈がわからないだろうが、表現の実例として引用しよう。
- After Boies rephrased his question, Gates played the artful dodger. "It doesn't appear I'm talking about any other companies in that sentence," he replied, coyly.

面白かったのは、スキャンダルが多かったビル・クリントン前大統領について、かなりのヒットがあったことだ。例えば、次は記事の見出しと本文の冒頭だが、
