「へその緒」ではない umbilical

先日スペースシャトルについて書いたつながりで、やはりシャトルが出てくる医療サスペンス小説 "Gravity" から、umbilical という単語を取り上げたい。「へその緒（の）」ということだが、他に、名詞として「命綱」「酸素などを供給するケーブル」、また形容詞として「緊密な依存関係にある」といった意味がある。

"Gravity" では、船外活動の場面で tether という名詞といっしょに出てきた。

- "A-OK?" asked Luther, checking the latches on their umbilical tethers.

- "They're coming out now," said Emma, watching on closed-circuit TV as the two men emerged from the crew lock, umbilical tethers trailing after them.

私がこの単語に初めて触れたのは、テレビドラマの中で umbilical cord として出てきたものだった。これも「へその緒」ということだが、そのドラマでは「精神的な共生関係を断ち切る」という比喩的な意味で cut the umbilical cord と使われていた。

こうした「へその緒」以外の意味を、英英辞書がどう説明しているか見てみよう。

- cable or pipe providing essential link: a cable, tube, or pipe attaching somebody or something to an essential supply, e.g. the tube that connects a deep-sea diver to an oxygen supply on a ship

- the line that supplies an astronaut with oxygen and in some cases with communications while outside the spacecraft

- a necessary, supportive, or nurturing link or connection

- a source or means of support or sustenance

形容詞の umbilical は、

- being a necessary or nurturing link or connection

- joined together by or as if by an umbilical cord; heavily dependent in a close relationship

ネットでさらに実例を調べてみよう。

ついでだが、「自立する」「乳離れする」ということをいいたい場合に使えそうな表現としては、他に stand on one's own feet とか be on one's own、また go out into the world、さらには leave the nest などがある。

また、乳離れできない状態やマザコン男には be tied to [cling to] one's mother's apron strings、mama's boy など、また子どもが巣立って残された親は empty nester というそうだ。

さらについでに、「臍帯血」は umbilical cord blood、連想で「胎盤」は placenta である。数年前の紀子さまの出産では「前置胎盤」 placenta previa という言葉を聞いたが、私には英語はもちろん日本語でも知らないものだった。
