厚顔無恥にして大胆不敵 (chutzpah)

前回は、AIG問題をめぐって共和党の議員が物議を醸す発言をしたことについて書いたが、同氏の発言に chutzpah という単語が出てくる。時おり目にする単語なので、ついでに触れておきたい。

前に取り上げたことがある schmooze 同様、イディッシュ語・ヘブライ語から来ているという。

私の学習ノートを見返すと、次のような実例が書きとめてあった。以前紹介したビートルズの本 "The Love You Make" にあったものである。

It was a mixture of guts and gall that went beyond chutzpah into the rage of something spooky.

辞書にある次のような説明を読むと、否定的なニュアンスを持つ言葉のように思える。

- （主に米俗）厚かましさ、ずうずうしさ；生意気、出しゃばり、思いやりのなさ

- [U] behavior that is extremely confident and often rude, with no respect for the opinions or abilities of anyone else
The movie was made with a little money and a lot of chutzpah.
I wonder who had the chutzpah to disagree with him?

しかし、別の定義を見るとapproving と書いているものがあって、少し見方が変わってくる。余談だが次の例文中の Cohen はユダヤ系によくみられる名前で、単語の由来にあわせたものか。

さらに次のような記述もあり、月並みだが、肯定的・否定的いずれかは結局のところ状況による、ということになろうか。

- 必ずしも悪い意味でなく、個性的な強さとして賞賛される場合もある

ちなみに「新編英和活用大辞典」は「（口）ずぶとい、大胆な」としていた。名詞であることを考えれば、形容詞のような訳語を辞書がつけているのは厳密に見るとふさわしくない気もする。

最後に発音だが、ch- のところは /h/ あるいは /x/ で、後者(/ks/ではない）は普通の英単語にはない音である。それに続く母音は /u/ になる。
