「目隠しされて板の上を歩く」 (walk the plank)

前回 Jolly Roger を取り上げた流れで、海賊にからんだ表現について書くことにしよう。「海賊もの」といえば頭に浮かぶ場面のひとつとして、船から海に張り出した板の上を目隠しのうえ歩かされる処刑があるのではないかと思うが、これを表すイディオムが walk the plank である。

そして今回、あらためて辞書を引いて知ったのは、この表現に「強制されて地位や役職を退く、やめさせられる、詰め腹を切らされる」「罰を受ける」という比喩的な意味があることだった。

a possibly fictional punishment とあるので、実際に行われていたかどうかは定かでないということか。Wikitionary の walking the plank の項では、「作り話」とまでは書いていなかったが、

Although walking the plank plays a large role in contemporary pirate lore, in reality walking the plank was a very rare phenomenon. Most pirates, mutineers, etc., would not bother with such an elaborate (and prone to mishap) means of doing away with their captives. The few who particularly enjoyed torturing their victims (such as Edward Low) would likely prefer longer-lasting methods.

としている。真実はどのへんにあるのだろうか。

ついでに、ここに出てくる mutineer は「反乱・暴動を起こした人」ということだが、「～に関係する人」という意味の接尾辞 -eer のついた pirate の類語に privateer や buccaneer がある。

さらについでだが Wikipedia の pirate の項を見たら、鉤の手に義足、といった古典的な海賊のイラストが載っていて、説明文には次のような関連の単語が並んでいて参考になる。

ところで、私の持っている英和辞書の多くは plank について次のように数字をあげている。業界に規定があるのだろうか、しかしそれにしては値が揃っていない。

- 軟木では2-4インチ（5-10cm）の厚さと11インチ（27．5cm）の幅を持つ

- 特に厚さ2-8インチ、幅8インチ以上のもの
（リーダーズ英和辞典）

- 通例厚さ5-15センチ、幅20センチ以上；board より厚い
（ジーニアス英和大辞典　アンカーコズミカ英和辞典も同内容）

一方、英英辞書は電子辞書やオンラインで目にした範囲では、唯一 Online Etymology Dictionary がこうした説明をしていたが、

...Technically, timber sawed to measure 2 to 6 inches thick, 9 inches or more wide, and 8 feet or more long. Political sense of "item of a party platform" is U.S. coinage from 1848. To walk the plank, supposedly a pirate punishment, is first attested 1822 in Scott.

と、数値はまたまた異なっている。なお、ここにあるように、plank には「政党綱領の項目」という意味もある。

なお、上記の「リーダーズ」は数字をインチだけで表示していたが、個人的にはやはりセンチを併記してほしいと思う。ヤード・ポンド法で数字を示すことに意味があるのは、科学や産業などの分野、道路の制限速度、あるいは歌の "Five Hundred Miles" 「500マイルも離れて」のような固有名詞、などが思い浮かぶが、こうした例を除けば、たいていはメートル法に換算した数字だけでも十分ではないだろうか。
