incommunicado 「外部との連絡を断っている」

前回取り上げた aficionado からの連想で別のスペイン語風の単語 incommunicado について触れてみよう。

私がアメリカのSFテレビドラマ「スター・トレック」を好み、英語学習でもずいぶん助けになったことはこれまで何回も書いたが、Star Trek the Next Generation のシリーズのあるエピソードに、この incommunicado が出てきて、印象深く覚えた。

乗組員たちが息抜きで劇をするシーンで、ある女性乗組員が探偵事務所の秘書の役を演じている。事務所に客がやってきて探偵に会おうとするのだが、秘書は "Sorry, he's incommunicado." というようなことを言う。確かそんな場面だったと記憶している。
