tipping point 「転換点」「元に戻れない点」 （「ニューズウィーク」印刷版が廃刊へ・その４）

tipping point はよく目にする言葉だと思っていたが、意外や私の電子辞書にある英和辞典にはどれにも載っていなかった。このところ取り上げている「ニューズウィーク印刷版が廃刊へ」について、この雑誌のサイトにある告知記事を読んでいたらこの表現が出てきたのでメモしておきたい。

- Currently, 39 percent of Americans say they get their news from an online source, according to a Pew Research Center study released last month. In our judgment, we have reached a tipping point at which we can most efficiently and effectively reach our readers in all-digital format.

私が使っている電子辞書の英和辞典には記載がないと書いたが、紙の辞書の「アンカーコズミカ英和辞典」には収録されていて、次のような語義があった。

- ティッピング・ポイント（小さな変化の積み重ねが突然劇的な変化をもたらす瞬間）

本来的にはそうなのだろうが、次のような英語辞書の説明の方がわかりやすいのではないか。

- the time at which a change or an effect cannot be stopped
The Earth has already passed the tipping point in terms of global warming.
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

- a time when important things start happening in a situation, especially things that you cannot change
(Macmillan Dictionary)

「マクミラン」には同義語として、

- turning point, peak, climax, highlight, watershed, milestone, crossroads, breaking point, the moment of truth, the point of no return

が列挙されている。こうした単語を眺めても tipping point の意味がつかめるように思う。

なお、上記の記事には ”A Turn of the Page for Newsweek" というタイトルがつけられている。turn a page は「ページをめくる」だが、「新しい局面に入る」「出直しをする」といった比喩的な使い方もできそうだ。

ついでに、page-turner といえば「ページをどんどんめくりたくなる本、読み出したらやめられない本」ということで、これは以前取り上げたことがある。
