live and let live （００７「死ぬのは奴らだ」）

先日、００７の映画「死ぬのは奴らだ」 Live and Let Die のテーマ曲を取り上げたが、今回は題名の元となった live and let live について少し書いてみたい。

ポール・マッカートニーの曲は、始まってすぐこの表現が出てくる。

- When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
But if this ever-changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die

let のあとに others が省略されていて、「自分は自分、他人は他人」「相手は自分とは違うものとして受け入れる」といった説明が辞書に載っている。

以下に引用する英英辞典の語義を読んでみると、他人は自分とは違うということをわきまえて邪魔をせず、相手とうまくやっていく、といったことだろうが、うまく対応するドンピシャの日本語が考えにくいように思う。

「持ちつ持たれつ」という訳も見かけたことがあるが、必ずしもそうしたニュアンスを表すとは限らないようだ。ただ、ポールの「死ぬのは奴らだ」の歌詞にはうまくはまりそうな気もする。私が所有する辞書でもっとも古い「岩波英和辞典」は、「相身互い」という訳語を当てていた。

この表現をひねった live and let die は、「自分が生きていくためなら他人は死んでもかまわない」「自分がうまくやっていくためには他人がどうなってもいい」ということになるが、原作者のイアン・フレミングはうまいタイトルをつけたものだと思う。先日書いたように、邦題もうまい。

この曲は、ガンズ・アンド・ローゼス Guns N' Roses がカバーしている。ポール・マッカートニーの原曲にかなり忠実だ。
