the law of the jungle （弱肉強食）と「ユア・アイズ・オンリー」

前回、007の関連で取り上げた live and let live で連想したのが the law of the jungle である。「ジャングルのおきて」とは、つまりは「弱肉強食」ということだ。自分の英語学習ファイルを検索したら、偶然にもジェームズ・ボンドものの原作小説を読んでいて見つけた実例がメモしてあった。

- Hammerstein had operated the law of the jungle on two defenceless old people. Since no other law was available, the law of the jungle should be visited upon Hammerstein.

翻訳では「読後焼却すべし」と題されている短編に出てくる文である。映画は日本では「ユア・アイズ・オンリー」として公開されたが、この頃になると007の映画は原題の作品とほとんど内容に共通点がなく、事実上タイトルを持ってきただけになっていた。

それはともかく、the law of the jungle について、英英辞典の定義や例文を引用しよう。

３つ目に出てくる「ジャングル・ブック」といえば、私はディズニーの作品を連想するが、その原作が The Jungle Book なのだそうだ。

ついでだが、短編のタイトルになっている for your eyes only という表現は、「他の人が見るのは不可」、つまりは「極秘」という意味である。「読後焼却すべし」と訳されてはいるものの、実際に焼却する必要はないようだが、味のある邦題ではある。

そういえば、秘密指令のテープが自動消滅するシーンがひとつの売りだったのが、映画「ミッション・インポッシブル」の元となったテレビドラマの「スパイ大作戦」 Mission Impossible だった。
