err on the (right) side of 「まだましな方を選ぶ」「～に越したことはない」 [単語・表現]
water が「ワーラー」のように発音される t 音について前回書いた際、"It's better to err on the side of being too proper than too sloppy." という言葉を引用した。今回は日本人にわかりにくいのではと思われるこの表現について書きたい。
err on the side of... を直訳して「～の側で間違える」と考えると何のことかと思うが、この表現は、そうしたほうがいい・そうするべきだ、という文脈で使われると「どうせ間違えるのなら、ましな方で間違えよ」「ネガティブな選択肢の中からあえて選ぶなら、～の方がまだましだ」というようなニュアンスになる。
冒頭にあげた文は、/t/ を軽く発音するか、しっかりと発音するかについてアメリカ人が書いたもので、これに先立つ部分を含めた文脈は前回のエントリを参照していただきたいが、「だらしないと思われるよりは、むしろ堅苦しいと受け取られる方がまし」、「崩れた発音をするくらいなら、律儀な発音をするに越したことはない」という意味になる。

こなれた日本語にしにくいようで、「～しすぎて間違う」をはじめとして、苦戦しているものが多いなというのが正直な印象だ。「じゃあお前がやってみろ」と言われたらすごすごと退散するしかないが。なお、私がひいきにしている「アンカーコズミカ英和辞典」には、残念ながらこのイディオム自体記載がなかった。
次に英語圏の辞書を見たが、これまた非ネイティブにはピンとこない説明が意外に多いように感じた。その中でも比較的わかりやすいものとしては、
- err on the right side

続いて、ネットで見つけた最近の実例である。イギリスでは、マスコミの倫理が問われる出来事があったことを受けて、報道を規制する法律をつくるかどうかが取り沙汰されている。ヘイグ外相は規制に反対で、「言論統制に比べれば、言論の自由の名のもとに起きるトラブルの方がまだましだ」という考えの持ち主のようだ。
- FOREIGN Secretary William Hague yesterday hinted there will be no state regulation of newspapers as he declared: “You have to err on the side of freedom.”

なお連想で、(choose) the lesser of the two evils という表現が頭に浮かぶ。「悪いものばかりの中ではその度合いが小さい方(どうせ選ぶならそちらを選べ）」、「（あえて選ぶなら）大悪よりも小悪」という意味である。
２つの表現を並べた例をインドのメディアのサイトで見つけた。これも言論の自由と検閲について書かれたものだ。
- If I have to exercise personal choice, I would go for the lesser of the two evils. I would prefer to err on the side of freedom, rather than on the side of censorship.
