distill 「にじみ出る」「（良い物を）抜き出す」「まとめる」

「液体の移動」にからんだ表現の続きである。前回の instill と対といえるのが distill だ。意味も対で、「徐々に出てくる」「（本質的なもの）を取り出す」ことを表す。アルコール好きの私は「酒の蒸留」の方をまず思い浮かべてしまうが。

これも instill の当初の意味と同様「したたる」を表すラテン語がもとで、これに分離をあらわす di- がついた形だそうだ。私は前述のとおり「（～を）蒸留する」「精製する」などと覚えたが、液体から離れた意味でも使うことができる。
