(not) case-sensitive 「大文字・小文字を区別（しない）」

Google の頭文字を小文字にして動詞化した google について前回触れたが、小文字・大文字（特に活字）は lower (upper) case というので、その連想で case-sensitive という言葉を取り上げたい。

capital letter, small letter の方がおなじみかもしれないが、ここでの case は印刷の活字ケースのことらしく、大文字・小文字を分けて入れたことからこうした呼び方ができたのではないかと思う。

それはともかく、その case に sensitive なわけなので、「大文字と小文字を区別した」ということになる。

not case-sensitive とは、つまり case-insensitive である。名詞にすれば case-sensitivity となる。

私がこの言葉を知ったのはインターネットの時代になってからだ。英語のサイトで何かの申し込みか登録をした際に、

- Letters are not case-sensitive

といった表示があり、「なるほど、こんな風にいうのか」と感心した。

ついでだが、「大文字で」は in upper case あるいは in capital letters で、upper (lower) case は複数形にならない。私が使っている電子辞書の英和辞典にはいずれも記載がないが、英語の辞典には mass noun とか U (unaccountable) と注をつけているものがある。

もうひとつついでに、小文字と同じ大きさ（高さ）の大文字は small capital と呼ぶ。

以下はオンライン辞書にあった case-sensitive の説明である。定義はどれもみごとに同じだったので、２つ目以降は用例だけを引用しよう。
