mumbo jumbo 「ちんぷんかんぷん」 （「007は二度死ぬ」） [読書と英語]
「わけのわからない言葉」を表す単語について続ける。前回の jabberwocky と違って、すぐ覚えられて自分でも会話で使ったことがあるのが mumbo jumbo である。
最初に出会ったのは、確か学生時代にテレビで見た外国人のインタビューだった。具体的な内容は覚えていないが、響きがおもしろいので耳に残り、放送後にすぐ辞書をひいたように記憶している。
少し前に007シリーズの原作小説を全巻読み終わったことについては何回か書いているが、そのひとつ、「007は二度死ぬ」にもこの単語が出てきて、印をつけていた。
作品の冒頭、日本にやってきたジェームズ・ボンドが諜報機関の責任者であるタイガー田中と芸者をあげて酒を飲み、親交を深めている場面がある。２人が「そろそろやるか」と言って始めたのは、なんと「じゃんけん」。３回戦で勝ったのは、じゃんけんになじみがないはずのボンドだった。
- 'What was the secret of your method?'
Bond had had not method. He quickly invented the one that would be most polite to Tiger. 'You are a man of rock and steel, Tiger. I guessed that the paper symbol would be the one you would use the least. I played accordingly.'
This bit of mumbo-jumbo got by. Tiger bowed. Bond bowed and drank more sake, toasting Tiger.

「何か秘訣でもあるのか」と尋ねたタイガーに、ボンドは気配りをみせていかにもそれらしいことをでっち上げると、タイガーは納得してしまい、酒をもう一杯やろう、ということなる。
このあたりを読んでいて、「007がじゃんけん！」と、そのシュールさに活字を追う目が点になってしまった。
ちなみに今は亡き丹波哲郎がタイガー田中を演じた映画は、原作とストーリーが大幅に違い、このじゃんけんの場面もない。

-s のついた複数形を示した辞書がある一方で、不可算・物質名詞としているものも複数あり、食い違いが見られる。どちらなのだろうか、単語の響きと同様に謎めいている。
上記の語義にあるように、由来は西アフリカの現地民族の信仰に関係がありそうだが、はっきりともしていないようだ。

初めに書いたように、英語を話す機会がある時にはこの単語を会話におりまぜたこともある私だが、それは若い頃のことで、そのうちに使わなくなった。
仕事で英語を使う時は途上国の人たちが相手のことが多かったが、この単語がアフリカの民族に関係があるらしいと知ってから、由来の背景に欧米優位の視点があるような気がしてきたからである。
単なる考えすぎで実際にはそんなことはなく、別の由来があるのかもしれないが、そこがはっきりしない限り、この単語を使うことに居心地の悪さを拭うことができなくなった、ともいえるだろうか。
英語やその文化についてどんなに知識を深めようとも、日本人である私の立ち位置は変わらない、そんなことを意識するようになってもう随分経つ。
