やはり実在した！ 秘密軍事基地「エリア５１」 [英語文化のトリビア]
Area 51 という「アメリカ英語の常識」について以前書いたことがある。UFOがひんぱんに目撃される、米軍が宇宙人にからむ極秘の研究をしている、といった噂が絶えない場所だが、先日新聞を手に取ったら、当のアメリカ政府が秘密基地の存在を正式に認めた、という記事が目に飛び込んできて、おおっと思った。
これは英文の記事を読まねばなるまい。さっそくネットでいくつか見つけた。とっつきやすいのは、やはりアメリカのテレビメディアであろうか。ABC や CNN のサイトはニュースの動画も載せているが、その中では映画「インデペンデンス・デイ」 Independence Day やドラマの「Ｘファイル」 The X-Files のシーンが使われている。
記事の書き出しも似通っている。

もちろん、宇宙人について衝撃の事実が公表されたわけではなく、新型軍用機をテストするのに使われていた、という（当然ではあるが）夢のない内容だった。こうしたテスト飛行がUFO目撃談につながっていたらしい。

日本語では「～のメッカ」という言い回しは最近あまり見かけなくなり、代わって「聖地」の方がいま風だという印象があるが、それはともかく、この意味での英語の Mecca は小文字で始めてもいいようだ。
ロイター通信の記事は、映像がない分、出だしを工夫して目を引こうとしていた。

good news と bad news を対比させるレトリックはご存知の方も多いだろう。the good news is ... の直後に the bad news is... を続ける言い回しはジョークにも使われる。また、buff は「マニア」ということだが、以前取り上げたことのある aficionado という類義語を使っていた記事もあった。

さて、目にした記事は、「今回の公表でもエリア５１についての論争は収まらないだろう」という切り口を取っている点で共通していた。マスコミとしても、これで長年の謎が決着してはつまらないはずだ。

冒頭に引用した部分にもあった conspiracy theory は、ケネディ大統領の暗殺やダイアナ妃の死亡事故、９１１テロやアポロの月着陸、さらにＵＦＯの目撃談にいたるまで、さまざまな謎の出来事について使われる。英和辞典には「陰謀説」などとあるが、「ウラに誰か黒幕がいる」あるいは「当局は真相を知っているが、都合の悪い内容なので隠している」といった考え方を指す。
ついでだが redact 「修正する、編集する」の名詞形 redaction は reduction と混同しないようにしたい。
ＡＰ通信はこんな「期待の声」も伝えていた。
- Audrey Hewins, an Oxford, Maine, woman who runs a support group for people like her who believe they have been contacted by extraterrestrials, said she suspects the CIA is moving closer to disclosing there are space aliens on Earth.
"I'm thinking that they're probably testing the waters now to see how mad people get about the big lie and cover-up," she said.
今回CIAが公表に踏み切ったのは、実は test the water(s) 「反応をうかがう」「様子を見る」「探りを入れる」ことが目的だと考えているわけだが、これで終わりにして欲しくないという願望のなせるわざ、といったら怒られるだろうか。なお how mad people...の部分は mad people でひとくくりにするとまさに怒りを買うはめになり、やはり how mad として考えないとまずいはずだ。
「エリア51」をめぐる記事では、英語についてさらに書きたいことがあるが、次回に続けることにしたい。
