thin blue line 「警察、治安を守る警官隊」

thin red line という表現を前回取り上げたが、赤といえば青、ということで、thin blue line もある。

「正邪を分かつ一線で治安維持に当たる者」というようなことだろうが、成り立ちについてさらに詳しい記述はオンライン辞書では見たらなかった。

次のサイトには、「thin red line を転用して20世紀に出来たもので、伝統的に警官の制服が青いことに由来する」といった内容の説明があったが、どれくらい裏付けがあるものなのかはわからない。

上記 Wikipedia の記述によると、1966年に作られたドキュメンタリーをはじめ、映画やテレビドラマなど、この表現をタイトルにした映像作品がいくつか作られている。いずれも警察を描いた内容だ。収録している辞書は少ないようだが、ネイティブにはピンと来る表現なのだろう。
