- list to starboard (port) 右舷(左舷)に傾く
という用例も載っている。
今回の事故を報じる記事で目にした実例としては、
- According to investigators, Captain Lee Joon-seok was not on the bridge at the time the Sewol ferry started to list sharply, with a junior officer at the wheel.
( ttp://www.aol.com/article/2014/04/18/vice-principal-saved-from-korea-ferry-found-hanged/20871709/ )
- Some media reports have said the vessel turned sharply, causing cargo to shift and the ship to list before capsizing.
(ibid.)
ついでだが上記の記事には、「上場」の意味の関連語として、
- Chonghaejin Marine Co Ltd is an unlisted company that operates five ships. It reported an operating loss of 785 million won ($756,000) last year.
(ibid.)
が出てくる文もあった。
先に書いたように、同じスペリングなのに項目を別立てにしているということは、語源が異なるということだろう。そこでオンライン辞書の Online Etymology Dictionary を調べてみた。
「リスト」の list はヨーロッパ大陸の言葉から入ったが、「傾く」の方の由来は不明とのこと。ただ、以下のようにひとつの説があげられていた。
- "tilt, lean," especially of a ship, 1880, earlier (1620s) lust, of unknown origin, perhaps an unexplained spelling variant of Middle English lysten "to please, desire, wish, like" with a sense development from the notion of "leaning" toward what one desires (compare incline). Related: Listed; listing. The noun in this sense is from 1630s.
- "I don't know why he abandoned the ship like that," said Ju Hi-chun, a maritime author interviewed the captain in 2006 as one of the experts on the sailing route to Jeju island.
But he added: "Koreans don't have the view that they have to stay with their ship until the end. It is a different culture from the West."
という指摘があった。そうなのかもしれないが、文化のせい、とされては犠牲者も浮かばれまい。
最後に、先の辞書の用例にあった「右舷・左舷」 starboard, port(side)に関連して、以前、以下のようなトリビアなどを書いたことがあるので、参考までにあげておきたい。
(→ starboard は「星」とは関係なかった)
(→ posh の由来は port out, starboard home か)
(→ 「刑事コロンボ」の思い出と port)
