the best of both worlds 「いいとこ取り」 （ドラマ「新スタートレック」） [スター・トレック]
これまで何回も書いたように、映画のタイトルやドラマのエピソードにつけられた題名は英語や文化的背景を学ぶうえで役に立つ。以前 the best of both worlds という表現にちょっとだけ触れたことがあるが（→海外テレビドラマのタイトルに学ぶ英語）、いま読んでいるペーパーバックにこれが出てきた。
この言い回しは、SFテレビドラマ「新スタートレック」 Star Trek The Next Generation の中でも評価が高い同名のエピソードで知った。人間とロボットが融合した生命体が現われ、人類に対して敵対行動を取る、というストーリーだ。個体としては人間をはるかに上回る強さを持つ、Borg と名乗るこの生命体の集団は、その後もシリーズを通じて人類最大の脅威となる。

このエピソードを知った時、何とも魅力的な原題だと思い（逆に邦題は何とも情けない）、ためしに辞書を引いてみたら載っていて、まとまった言い回しであることがわかった。「両方の世界の最上のもの」と訳すと何のことかよくわからないが、「２つの異なる存在の良い所をあわせ持ったもの・状況」ということである。
このエピソードでは、人間と機械の能力を兼ね備えた「ボーグ」のことを指していると取れるし、シリーズの主人公がこの生命体に拉致されて「ボーグ」に改造されるというストーリーなので、彼を意味しているとも思える。
ちなみにこのエピソードについては、Wikipedia に次のような記述があり、このシリーズとして見た場合に限らず、広く名作との呼び声が高いことがわかる。

補足すると、Furtwängler と Toscanini は、どちらも20世紀前半を代表する大指揮者で、その芸風は対照的である。ドイツ人のフルトヴェングラーは、ある意味で元の作品を超えてしまうような緩急自在な独自の解釈が魅力で、イタリア人のトスカニーニは、あくまで楽譜に忠実で明晰・精確な表現を押し出しているのが特徴だ。
そこでこの部分は、「レコード時代の到来で、指揮者はこの両者の特徴を兼ね備えた演奏を目指すようになった」というような意味だろう。Toscwängerism という造語はそうした現象を表している。
この部分に目がとまったのは、関連語といえる synthesize や mongrel 「雑種」「混血児、ハーフ」があったこともある。後者は offensive と辞書にあるので、あまり良い意味で使う言葉ではないらしいことがうかがえる。連想した表現に a cross between がある。さらに連想で、以前 cross-pollination という単語を取り上げたことがある（→cross-pollination 「相互交流」）。
もうひとつ、You can't have your cake and eat it. という言い回しもある。「一度にふたついい思いはできない」「どちらかひとつに決めなくてはならない」というような意味になる。
最後に英語圏のオンライン辞書から、定義や例文を引用しておこう。「両方の悪いところばかり」と逆にしたい場合は worst に入れ替えればいいこともわかる。
