pipeline 「（流通や情報の）供給ルート、伝達経路」 (「007 ダイヤモンドは永遠に」） [007 ジェームズ・ボンド]
先日、「fresh water は"新鮮な水"か？」について書いた際に tap water 「水道水」にも触れたが、tap 「蛇口」から水道「管」を連想したついでに、pipeline という単語を取り上げてみよう。
「パイプライン」として日本語にもなっているが、流れるものは石油や天然ガスに限らず、比喩的な意味で、モノや情報を伝えるルートを指して使うことができる。
数年前、イアン・フレミングによる007の原作小説を全巻まとめて原著で読んだが、その一作、「ダイヤモンドは永遠に」は、宝石の密輸ルートをジェームズ・ボンドが解明する冒険譚とあって、この pipeline が何度か出てきた。
次は、はじめの方でボンドがミッションを与えられる場面である。ダイヤモンドの密輸問題について、上司のMに対し「私は何をするのか」と007は質問する。
- Bond decided it was time to put the sixty-four thousand dollar question. 'And where do I come in, Sir?' he asked, looking across the desk into M's eyes.
'You've got an appointment with Vallance at the Yard in' -- M looked at his watch -- 'just over an hour. He's going to start you off. They're going to pull in this carrier tonight and put you into the pipeline instead of him.'

ボンドは密輸の運び屋になりすますことになるが、まずルートへの潜入について説明を受けるというわけである。なおここにでてくる the sixty-four thousand dollar question は、以前取り上げたことがある（→$64 question）。
もうひとつ、密輸に関わっているティファニー・ケイス Tiffany Case という女性にボンドが出会った場面にもこの言葉が出てくる。
- He liked this girl. He wanted to make friends with her. But it would be a question of using friendship to get further up the pipeline.

別の007の作品、「サンダーボール作戦」の原作には、次のような例があった。

英語圏の辞書にある説明を引用しよう。密輸やヘロインと、おだやかでない使われ方をしていたのは007ものだからかと思いきや、やはり時として秘密めいたルートについて使われることがわかる。

余談だが、「サンダーボール作戦」の原作は、ジェームズ・ボンドの宿敵となる「スペクター」という犯罪組織が初めて登場する作品だ（「原作」と書いたのは、映画はこれに縛られていないため）。
設定を一新して再スタートしたダニエル・クレイグの007シリーズは、次回作が「スペクター」と題されている。果たしてクレイグの reboot 版007では Spectre がどのような存在になるのか。今から楽しみである。
