pipe dream 「非現実的な考え」「夢物語」

今回も pipe がらみの表現について少し書くことにする。pipe dream はフレーズ集などで目にしそうな言い回しだと感じるが、しかしなぜ pipe なのか。「管のようにうつろな」ということか、と思って辞書を引いたら、ハズレだった。

吸引に使うパイプそのものではなく、吸う中身が問題なのであった。

19世紀末にアメリカで使われるようになったという説明が複数の辞書に載っているが、下記の The Phrase Finder というウェブサイトに由来について詳しい情報があった。英語圏でアヘンといえばイギリスなのに、アメリカが発祥というのも不思議だ、とも書かれている。

なお表記は２語の間にハイフンを入れても良く、pipe-dream は動詞（「空想にふける」）にもなる。

ついでに、日本人学習者の中には、こうした２語の言葉は強勢をうしろに置いて発音しがちな人がいるように感じているが、１語目の pipe にあるので注意したい。

英語圏の辞書からも定義や例文を抜き書きしておこう。
