Phillips head screwdriver 「プラスのドライバー」 （新・刑事コロンボ「汚れた超能力」） [固有名詞にちなむ表現]
前回 Svengali deck という表現を取り上げたTVドラマ「新刑事コロンボ・汚れた超能力」には、他にも固有名詞にちなむ表現がいくつか出てくる。そのひとつが Phillips head screw (screwdriver) である。
あるマジシャンが手品の道具（ギロチン）の手入れをしていて操作を誤ったらしく、刃に当って死んでしまった。しかし現場でコロンボは不審な点に気づく。死者はマイナスのドライバーを手にしていたが、道具にはプラスのねじが使われていたのだ。
これについてコロンボが説明しているシーンでは、日常生活用語といえるプラス・マイナスのねじやドライバーの英語をまとめて学ぶことができる。

これは、死んだ男ダイソンが道具の整備中に操作を誤ったように見せかけようと、何者かが（道具のねじはプラスなのを見落として）近くにあったマイナスのドライバーを死者の手に持たせたのではないか。マジシャンの死は単純な事故ではない。そうコロンボは考える。
おみごと、である。でもプロの刑事にとっては、これくらいは捜査のイロハなのだろうか。
それはともかく、ここにあるように、「プラス」「マイナス」と呼んでいる日本語からは想像できない言い方である。「マイナス」は slotted screwdriver、regular screw で、辞書を見ると standard screw という言い方も載っている。ねじは歴史的にいえばこちらが標準だったということだろうか。一方、「プラス」は Phillips head screw と、固有名詞らしい言葉が使われている。
調べてみると、Phillips は、このねじを考案した Henry F. Phillips というアメリカ人の技術者の名前で、商標になっている。オランダの有名電機メーカー「フィリップス」とは関係がないようだ。
Wikipedia を見ていて、さらにおもしろいと思った発見は、Phillips とは違う種類のプラスのねじがいくつかあることだった。Frearson というねじ、また日本の JIS B 1012 というタイプも載っている。詳しくは下記を参照いただきたい。

ただ、手持ちの電子辞書に載っているのは Phillips だけで、これが一般的なプラスのねじなのではないかと思う。
