Golden Arches 「マクドナルド（のロゴ）」

前回は、東京オリンピックのエンブレム取り下げにからんで、stylized T （Tの字をかたどった）という言い方を取り上げたが、類例を探すなかで stylized M が目にとまった。マクドナルドのロゴを指すのに使われていたが、そこに語頭が大文字の Golden Arches という言葉が出てきた。

エクソンモービル ExxonMobil 社が、２つの x をつなげたおなじみのロゴを、FXX というケーブルテレビ局のロゴにマネされたとして起こした訴訟についての記事である。

"Golden Arches" は、マクドナルドのロゴの、あの丸っこいMを指すのは明らかだが、知っている人にはおなじみの決まった言い方なのだろう、と考えたらその通りだった。下記のような説明が見つかる。

They were incorporated into the chain's logo in 1962, which resembled a stylized restaurant, and in the current Golden Arches logo, introduced 1968, resembling an "M" for "McDonald's".

前者は yellow と形容しているのが正直だ。後者によると、あのアーチは実店舗に使ったのが先で、後にロゴに取り入れたということになる。

Golden Arches の実例はいくつも見つかったが、最初のものは、日本マクドナルドの苦境を伝える記事のタイトルで、golden に (lack) luster をかけてあり、うまいものである（ネイティブスピーカーから見れば"ベタ"なのかもしれないが）。

余談だが、学生時代にグレイハウンドを乗り継いでアメリカ各地を旅行したのが私の初めての海外体験だったが、マクドナルドやバーガーキングにはお世話になった。日本人の苦手な発音にあげられる McDonald's が一発で通じた時はうれしかったのを覚えている。
