sub rosa (under the rose) 「秘密の」「こっそりと」

前回と前々回は、いずれも海外ドラマに出てきた「内密」という意味の表現を取り上げたが、さらに連想した sub rosa を知ったのもドラマである。私が英語学習でいろいろお世話になった「スター・トレック」の新シリーズ Star Trek: The Next Generation で、この言葉をタイトルに使ったエピソードがあったのだ。

残念ながら映像は手元になく、ストーリーも覚えていないので、sub rosa という言葉そのものが出てくるのか、また内容とどう関係するのかはわからない。

いずれにせよ under the rose を意味するラテン語に由来する。sub は、英語でも subway とか submarine、submerge などに見られる接頭辞でおなじみだろう。「バラの下」では秘密が語られるものなのだ。

under the rose の形でもイディオムになっている。辞書には archaic とあるので古風に聞こえる表現らしい。

興味を抱くのは、なぜ「バラ」が「秘密」を表すようになったのか、ということだが、おもしろいことに、辞書によって説明が「バラバラ」である (Pardon the pun! おやじギャグにお許しを) 。

私の使っている英和辞書を見ると、「ランダムハウス」には、守秘を誓う象徴として会議の席にバラを置いた古代の習慣によるもので、この習慣はキューピッドがビーナスの秘密を守るために沈黙の神にバラを贈ったという伝説に由来する、とある。

これとほぼ同じだが、「ジーニアス大英和」には、古代ローマ期に秘密会議のしるしにテーブルに吊るしたことから、と書かれている。

一方、はっきり違うのは「研究社大英和」で、食堂の天井にバラの花を彫り、話の秘密を求めたという古い習慣に由来する、としている。

英語圏の辞書をのぞいてみた。

他にもこうした記述が目立つので、有力なのは「会議場のテーブル上方に天井からバラを吊るした」であり、「テーブルそのものに置く」とか「食堂の天井の彫りもの」ではない、ということになりそうだ。

と思ったら、World Wide Words という言葉についてのサイトは、また微妙に違う説を載せていていた。

- The ceilings of Roman dining rooms were decorated with roses to remind guests that what was said there under the influence of wine (sub vino) was also sub rosa, under the rose, privileged and not to be made public.

つまり、ローマ時代の食堂はバラで飾られ、酒の影響（およびバラ）のもとでしゃべったことはその場限りとされた、というようなことらしい。いったいどれが正解なのだろうか、答えは得られないままである。

身近でありふれた存在にみえるバラだが、"A rose is a rose is a rose." という不可思議な名言とあわせて、何かと謎がつきまとう花でもあるようだ。
