Brexit, Grexit 「イギリスのEU離脱」「ギリシャのユーロ圏離脱」

辞書のオックスフォード社が「今年の単語」に emoji （絵文字）を選んだことについて前回書いたが、そのサイトには、候補となった他の単語が The Word of the Year shortlist としてあげられている。そのひとつ Brexit を、Grexit という単語とあわせて短く取り上げてみたい。

どちらも、使われている内容を見ればすぐに意味がわかるといえそうな造語だ。Brexit は Britain + exit で、今年春のイギリス総選挙で論点となった「イギリスがヨーロッパ連合から離脱するかどうか」について使われる。勝利した保守党のキャメロン首相は、2017年末までに Brexit の賛否を国民投票で問うと述べている。

もうひとつの Grexit は2012年頃からすでに使われているそうで、今回の Oxford の shortlist には含まれていないが、こちらは Greece (Greek) + exit である。財政危機に陥ったギリシャは、EUの支援を受けるために厳しい緊縮財政改革を受け入れるのか、それとも痛みを覚悟のうえでユーロ圏を離脱するのか。一時はこの単語が英文記事に踊っていたが、結局ギリシャは緊縮策を受け入れた。
