shades of gray 「はっきりしないもの、玉虫色」

書店の洋書コーナーに、男女のラブシーンの表紙が印象的な "Fifty Shades of Grey" という本が積まれていた。この shades of gray (イギリス英語は grey) は、その昔何かで目にしたものの辞書で見つからず、インターネットが登場した後に調べたという、私にとって思い出のある表現である。

最初にこの表現を見たのが何だったかは覚えていないが、はっきり認識したのは、私の好きなアメリカのTVドラマ「新スタートレック」 Star Trek: The Next Generation だった。この言い回しをタイトルにしたエピソードがあったからだ。

1989年に放送された第２シーズンの最終話で、登場人物が病気による昏睡状態の中で過去のつらい体験を見るという内容だ。以前のエピソードのシーンを再利用してつなぎあわせた、総集編としても手抜きとしかいいようのない出来で、名作揃いのこのSFドラマの中にあってはワースト作品の有力候補である。

それはともかく、shade(s) には「陰」「日よけ」「色合、色調」、また「思い出させるもの (of)」といった意味がある。この最後の意味が、昏睡状態の中でぼんやりと見た過去の記憶というドラマの内容に合いそうだ、と、それこそぼんやりと考えた。

それからずっと後、また何かでこの表現に再会して、これはまとまった言い回しに違いないと考えた。その頃にはインターネットが一般化していたので、調べてみた。

まず、文字通り「グレーの階調」「灰色の濃淡の度合い」を指することがわかった。さらに、下記のオンライン辞書の記述のような意味がある。

- the fact of it not being clear in a situation what is right and wrong:
The film presents a straightforward choice between good and evil, with no shades of grey.

- when something is sketchy, superficial, or vague. the phrase can be used in many contexts. and yes, it was a phrase before that stupid movie came out.
"I'm not feeling this deal, this guy is way too many shades of grey"
"The mystery and shades of grey that surround the case make it hard to pinpoint the suspect"

後者の "...and yes, it was a phrase before that stupid movie came out" という記述から、冒頭に書いた小説に基づく映画があることを知った。最近映画をまともに見ておらず、世事に疎くなってきた私は知らなかったが、１年前に公開されたばかりで、邦題はそのまま「フィフティ・シェイズ・オブ・グレイ」となっている。

そして、原作と映画がかなり pornographic な内容で物議を醸したことも知った。先の Urban Dictionary の寄稿者が stupid と評した理由であろう。書店で見た本の表紙は映画に出てくるシーンを使ったもので、ロマンチックというよりエロチックというべきものだったのだ。この作品で "shades of grey" はどのような意味あいを持っているのだろうか。

もうひとつ、1960年代に活躍したグループ、モンキーズ The Monkees に、この表現をタイトルにした曲があることを今回知った（邦題は「灰色の影」）。

バラードなのでラブソングかと思ったが、"It was easy then to tell right from wrong. Easy then to tell weak from strong." "Today, there is no black or white. Only shades of gray" といった意味深な歌詞を持っており、明らかに発表された1967年当時の社会的動乱を反映した作品だと思う。



ついでだが、この曲の歌詞を変えて作ったらしい「フィフティ・シェイズ・オブ・グレイ」のパロディ替え歌もインターネットで発表されていた。

Fifty Shades of Grey:

I remember I was intrigued by this book title just like you did when I first saw it in a book store.

As I understand, English native speakers tend to put things by the theory of dichotomy: Yes or No, Black or White, Good or Bad… At that moment, I thought the book might be giving some idea that would withhold or reserve any judgments on events in human society. I was kind of right and kind of wrong.

Soon after I picked up the book and dipped into it, I learned Grey was a guy’s family name. I was right in the way that the author didn’t judge whether he had done things right or wrong, leaving decisions to her readers.

Mr. Grey was depicted as a man full of “shades”. The shadows he created in his life had different facets, as many as “fifty”.

Chida-san, thank you very much for your information. It never occurred to me "Grey" in the title was meant to be the name of a character in the novel--so it was a bit of a surprise.

I should have searched for more about this book online, which would certainly have given me the correct answer. As people might say, you should never cut corners！

I imagine "shades of grey" is a rather commonly-used expression to indicate gradations of grey color. If that's true, the author must have decided that "Grey" would be the perfect and logical choice for the name of the man with split personality and mysterious background.

As for "black-and-white" mindset, I recall what Prof. Masao Kunihiro once said in a lecture many years ago. The trailblazer in simultaneous interpreting in Japan stressed that Westerners are prone to view things in an either-or, dichotomous perspective, citing examples from then-current events and his own experiences.

そういえば國広氏がらみでtempus fugitさんを知ったのでしたね。私も彼の著作からコージブスキーという名前、一般意味論、後にＳ．Ｉ．ハヤカワの著作などへと導かれました。dichotomyという単語もこの時知ったものです。
私はこの映画を観ました。タイトルの意味については考えませんでしたが、映画の中の曲で１曲とても気にいった曲があり、ダウンロードしたことを覚えています。今確認するとI know You.という曲でSkylar Greyという名前の女性歌手が歌ってます。名前がGreyというのは偶然かと思いますが。

英語学習者さん、コメントありがとうございました。I Know Youをネットで聞いてみましたが、原作や映画のイメージ（実際に触れてはいないので、あくまで情報から抱いたもの）に合っているなと感じました。調べたらSkylar Greyは芸名だそうで、この映画以前から使っているので直接の関係はないようですが、もしかしたらそれが縁で製作者側から依頼を受けたのかもしれませんね。
