clip show 「総集編」「以前の映像を再利用したエピソード」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
先日 shades of gray を取り上げた際、この表現はTVドラマ「新スタートレック」 Star Trek: The Next Generation の作品のタイトルになっていて、そのエピソードは一種の“総集編”だと書いた。関連で clip show という言葉を連想したので触れておこう。
テレビのシリーズで、それまで放送した回から抜き出した映像 (clip) をまとめたものを指す。日本のエンタメ作品の「総集編」は、「ダイジェスト版」という意味でも使われるように思うが、clip show は、ドラマなら過去のシーンを利用しつつも別個のまとまったストーリーに仕立てた場合に使うという印象を持っている。
私が使っている辞書を見たら、意外なことにこの表現は載っていなかったでインターネットを見ると、下記のような記述があった。やはり単純なダイジェスト版のことではなさそうだ。
- A clip show is an episode of a television series that consists primarily of excerpts from previous episodes. Most clip shows feature the format of a frame story in which cast members recall past events from past installments of the show, depicted with a clip of the event presented as a flashback.

「新スタートレック」の "Shades of Gray" も、まさに "cast members recall past events" "with a clip of the event presented as a flashback" のスタイルを取った clip show だが、先日書いたように「手抜き」感がありありだった。
このエピソードについて書かれた英文を読んだら、予算不足による窮余の策であり、撮影は通常の半分以下の３日で終えたと書かれていて、なるほどと思った。今回の表現を含めて引用しよう。なお the season とは、「新スタートレック」の第２シーズンを指す。
- It was the only clip show filmed during the series and was created due to a lack of funds left over from other episodes during the season.

ただ、clip show は常に予算不足が製作理由とは限らないようで、テレビ関係のあるサイトは次のように説明していた。
- An episode which consists mainly of fragments (clips) of previous episodes. Usually has a theme: for example, to highlight a character's development over the years, or show the relationship between characters. （中略）Clip shows can be used to stretch the budget - they utilize footage already shot, thus needing only narrative glue money for the episode.

とはいっても、一般的にはこうしたエピソードはあまり歓迎されないだろう。Urban Dictionary の記述者は次のように辛口である。clip show がシーズンの終わりに作られがちであるようなのも、予算切れとあわせて、こうした事情があるのではないか。
- A sorry excuse to extend the season of a show by using pre-existing clips from the show in a nostalgic manner.

余談だが、SFという枠にとどまらず一般のドラマとしても傑作シリーズだと思う「新スタートレック」の中で "Shades of Gray" は“黒歴史”扱いのようだ。上にあげたサイトの別のページには、またもや予算が苦しくなった時に会社側が再度 clip show で乗り切れと言い出したが、このエピソードの悪評に懲りていた製作陣はそっぽを向いた、という話が紹介されていた。
- "Shades of Gray" was poorly received, with even writer Maurice Hurley calling it "terrible, just terrible". In the fourth season, Paramount Pictures asked The Next Generation producers for another clip show to balance the budget for the season. Michael Piller and Rick Berman, however, despised the idea as they didn't want a repeat of "Shades of Gray".

だから先に引用したように、このエピソードが "the only clip show filmed during the series" となったのだろうが、こうした製作陣の気骨が数々の名エピソードを生み、シリーズの評価を高めた、といえるのではないか・・・と言うは簡単、実行は難しいことではあろうが。
