shirt untucked over trousers 「ズボンから出したシャツ」「タックアウト」 [和英表現]
日本で起きた事件を取り上げた People Who Eat Darkness （邦題「黒い迷宮: ルーシー・ブラックマン事件15年目の真実」）からの実例を使って「スカートではない skirt」について先日書いたが、おもしろいことに skirt は shirt と共通の語源を持つ。同じ本に、シャツを「タックアウト」して着ることを表す表現があった。
失踪し、その後遺体で見つかったイギリス人女性 Lucie Blackman さんの事件と関わりがある人物が逮捕された。東京駐在特派員である著者は、大阪にある容疑者の実家を訪ねたが、お手伝いさんを名乗る女性がインターホン越しに応えただけだった。実は容疑者の母親だろうと著者は思ったものの、仕方なく帰ろうとすると、

隣の門から出てきたのはしわくちゃのワイシャツを着た五十がらみの男で、容疑者の弟だった。
「アウト」「タックアウト」はどうも和製英語らしく、また trousers (pants) は日本語では「ズボン」よりも「パンツ」というようになっているが、この男性については、こうした今風の言葉を使うより、「シャツのすそをズボンから出して着ていた」とした方がふさわしそうだ。いや、着こなしとして「出している」というより、むしろ「出ちゃっている」「出ているのを気にしない」という感じなのかもしれない。
untuck はもちろん un + tuck である。tuck は「ひだ」の意味の「タック（をつける）」のほか、「すそを折り返す、まくり上げる」、そして「すそをはさむ込み、押し込む」「タックイン」ということになる。
ネットを検索すると、untuck を含めいろいろ実例が見つかる。少し引用しよう。

熟年オヤジの私も、特に意識することもなく休日はフツーに「タックアウト」で街を歩いているが、私がうんと若かったころは、誰もがシャツをズボンから出して着ることはまずなかったはずだ。いつの間にそうなったのか、時代の変化が何となくおもしろい。

いつも拝見し勉強させていただいております。
tuck in/into/underはなんとなく布の端を入れるイメージになりがちなのですが、体の一部もありですね。小説などで、膝を抱え込む、は見たような気がします。Randomにも、tuck one's knees under one's chin (腰を降ろして)あごの下にひざを抱え込む.ーがありました。Randomには、上記のほかに「with his feet tucked under him きちんと正座して」とありました。なんとなく「きちんと」はどうなんだろう、と思ったのですが、引用されているOxforにも”in place"とありますし、Collinsを見ると、If you tuck something somewhere, you put it there so that it is safe, comfortable, or neat. とありますから、「きちんと正座して」という意味になるのでしょうね。使われがちな「fold]より正座の場合「tuck」のほうが適しているのではないかと思いました。

ところで全然違う話で恐縮ですが、PBS Politics Mondayでthe prohibitive favorateという表現が使われていました。聞いているときに、ん？意味が通じない、と思って調べましたら、The prohibitive favorite is the person/team/racehorse that is so likely to win that others are discouraged from competing.
と、想像していたのと真逆の意味だったので、まだまだなぁ、と落ち込んだ次第です。
