custodian of the handbags 「ハンドバッグの番をする」

custodian は「守衛」「管理人」として覚えた単語で、ほかに「保護者」「監督者」「守護者」といった固い訳語が辞書に並んでいるが、このところ表現を拾っているノンフィクション People Who Eat Darkness （邦題「黒い迷宮: ルーシー・ブラックマン事件15年目の真実」）に、もっと日常的な状況に使った例があった。

イギリス人女性 Lucie Blackman さんが日本で失踪しその後遺体で見つかった事件を取り上げた作品だが、最初の章に彼女の生い立ちとあわせて両親についての記述があり、母親の Jane が若い頃を回想して次のように語っている（母親だから girlfriends は同姓の友だちを指している）。

- I had lots of very beautiful girlfriends who had men flocking round them, but at discos I was always the custodian of the handbags.

ジェーンには、男性が寄ってくるような美人の友人がたくさんいたが、彼女自身はディスコに遊びに行ってもハンドバッグの見張り番ばかりをしていた、ということになる。この場合、冒頭にあげたような訳語は大げさ過ぎるだろう。

英語圏の辞書に書かれた custodian の説明を見ると、確かに必ずしもいかめしいイメージでとらえなくてもいいように思えてくる。とはいえ、価値のあるものが対象でなくてはならないというので、ズタ袋のような安物のカバンで大したものも入っていないような場合には使わないのではないか。
