exoplanet 「太陽系外惑星」 （地球に似た惑星がさらに見つかる） [ニュースと英語]
文系人間だが宇宙がらみの話が好きなので、「新たに1,200個以上の太陽系外惑星を確認した」とNASAが発表したというニュースに接して、さっそく英文の記事を探して読んだ。そこから exoplanet という単語を取り上げてみよう。
次の例は、AP通信の記事にあったものである
- The Milky Way just got a lot more crowded -- with planets.
NASA on Tuesday announced 1,284 new planets orbiting stars outside our solar system, called exoplanets.

この語を収録している辞書はあまり多くなかったが、exo- という接頭辞が outside という意味のうえ、文脈からもピンとくるだろうから、見出し語の検討対象にはなりにくいのかもしれない。
NASAは一度にこれほどの新惑星を発見したわけではなく、候補になっていた天体をまとめて認定したということがわかったが、いずれにせよ、これで既知の太陽系外惑星は3,200個以上に増え、そのうち21個が生命が存在できる条件を備えているという。
「生命が存在するのはこの宇宙で地球だけだろうか」というのは、地球人の本能的ともいえる疑問ではないかと思うし、こうした話題で "We are (not) alone." という言葉はよく見聞きする言葉だ。今回のAPの記事にも、
- "One of the great questions of all time, and one of NASA's science objectives in our journey to the solar system and beyond, is whether we are alone in the universe," said Paul Hertz, director of astrophysics for NASA.

NASA もこのへんを意識しているかのように、公式ウェブサイトの記事を下記に引用するような記述で始めている。以前も書いたが、科学系の組織・団体のサイトは、時に人文・社会系のサイトよりもずっと「つかみ」や「わかりやすさ」を工夫して広報記事を書いていると感じることがある（もちろん専門家向けのペーパーは違うスタイルを取っているはずだが）。

さて、英文法の復習になるが、APの記事にも出てくる定冠詞のついた sun, および moon は、太陽系の「太陽」、「（地球の）月」を指し、定冠詞をつけない一般名詞としては「（自分で光る）恒星」、「（惑星をめぐる）衛星」となる。
また、地球の月であっても、毎日変わる月の形を指す場合は不定冠詞をつけて a half-moon （半月）、a full moon （満月） などとなることにも注意したい。
