half-moon 「爪半月（爪の根元の白い部分）」

月は単体では the moon と定冠詞がつくが、「半月」「満月」といった形態を表すときには a half-moon, a full moon などと不定冠詞がつくと先日書いた。ついでに天体の月ではないが、half-moon が「爪のつけ根にある白いところ」を指すことを連想したので短く書いておきたい。

日本語でこの部分を「爪（そう）半月」ということを私が知ったのは、half-moon にこの意味があることを知ってからだった。「ルヌーラ」とも呼ばれるそうだが、lunula は字面からわかるようにラテン語の「月」 luna から来ている。先日、冨田勲氏の訃報にからんで取り上げた「月の光」は、原題（フランス語）が Clair de Lune である（参考→ 冨田勲さんを悼む）。

英語圏の辞書が、この部分をどう説明しているかを調べてみよう。half-moon を見ると、

- Something that is shaped like a half circle or a crescent, such as the lunula of a fingernail.

などとあるので、lunula も引いてみた。ラテン語の発音はわからないが、英単語としては第１音節に強勢があり、カタカナであえて書けば「ルヌーラ」より「ルーニュラ」とする方がそれらしい。複数形は lunulae /-li:/ である。

half-moon というが、crescent 「三日月（の形の）」を使った説明が目立つようなのがちょっとおもしろい。

ついでだが、レンズの高さ（上下）が短く横に長い昔ながらの老眼鏡も half-moon glasses (spectacles) という。最近は「リーディンググラス」「シニアグラス」と呼ばれ、レンズもふつうの大きさになっている（私もそうしたタイプを使っている）。なおウェブを見ると reading glasses, senior glasses が使われていて、和製英語とはいえないようだ。

もうひとつついでに、blue moon は「ひと月に２回満月が場合の、２度めの満月」を指す。

だから once in a blue moon というイディオムが「めったにない、ごくまれにしかない」ということになるのだろう。
