goldilocks 「生命が存在可能な」「景気がちょうどよい状態の」

先日、「新たな太陽系外惑星 (exoplanet) をNASAが確認」について書いた時に紹介したAP通信の記事に Goldilocks という単語が出てきた。手持ちの辞書のどれにも載っていない意味があることが、オンラインの辞書を見てわかった。

今回確認された新しい exoplanets のうち、９つは生命の存在が可能な条件を持っていることについて述べた部分である。

- Nine of these close-to-Earth-sized planets appear to orbit in the habitable zone of their stars. The tally for this Goldilocks zone of not too hot and not too cold, allowing for liquid water, now stands at 21 exoplanets following Tuesday's announcement.

すぐ前に habitable zone とあるので、この Goldilocks zone も同じような意味だろうと推測できる。

しかし goldilocks を手持ちの英和辞典で見ると、どれも

- ユーラシア産のキク科の多年草
- ヨーロッパ産のキンポウゲ科キンポウゲ属の植物
- (時にG-) 金髪の人（若い女）
- (G-) ゴールディロックス（英国の昔話 Goldilocks and the Three Bears で、３匹のクマの家を訪れ眠り込んだ女の子）
- (米俗) （金を取らずに食べてくつろぐ）強盗

などとなっていて、当てはまる意味が見当たらない。

しかし英語圏のオンライン辞書を見たら、ずばりの語義を載せたものがあった。

- Denoting or referring to the most desirable or advantageous part of a range of values or conditions (typically the center):
the planet is in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone:
a place that’s not too hot and not too cold he promises us a return to the Goldilocks economy—not too much deflation, not too much inflation

Wiktionary の goldilocks には当てはまる語義はなかったものの、別途、見出し語として、

- Goldilocks planet ‎(plural Goldilocks planets)
(astronomy) A planet which orbits in the habitable zone around a star, where temperatures like those on Earth occur, allowing for the possible existence of liquid water and of life.

があった。

こうした記述にあるようにイギリスの童話に由来するということだが、その国や文化に生まれ育ったわけではない者にピンと来るものではないのは仕方がない。そこで日本語版の「ウィキペディア」を見ると、「3びきのくま」という項目があり、それを読むと、「ちょうどいい」「快適な」こととつながりのある童話の内容がわかる。

さらに

- 景気が過熱しておらず、さりとて不況でもないというほどよい加減の状態の経済を指してしばしば「ゴルディロックス経済」（Goldilocks economy）と呼ぶ。
宇宙で、生命の生存に適した宙域をたとえるときにもよく使われ、「ゴルディロックス・ゾーン」と呼ばれることもある。その中で、中心星から生命の生存にちょうど良い距離にある太陽系外惑星のことを「ゴルディロックス惑星」と呼ぶこともある。

という記述があり、知っている人にとってはおなじみの意味・言葉だということになりそうだ。

さらに英語の Wikipedia を見ると、この童話とは別に Goldilocks (disambiguation) という項目も設けられていた。それを見ると、惑星や経済以外にもこの単語をつけて使われる言葉がさらにあることがわかる。興味のある方は参照していただきたい。

なお、カタカナ語は「ゴ（ー）ルディ”ロックス”」と、後半にアクセントを置いて言う人が多いことと思うが、英単語は第一音節の /gould-/ に強勢があるので注意したい。
