diplomatic illness 「仮病」 （ヒラリー・クリントンの健康問題・続き）

diplomatic は「外交の」と覚えただけでは不十分で、「駆け引きがうまい」「そつのない」「外交辞令の」「微妙なニュアンスのある」といった意味もある要注意単語だが、このところ取り上げているヒラリー・クリントンの体調不良についての記事に diplomatic illness という言葉が出てきた。要は「仮病」を婉曲的に表現したものである。

そのCNNの記事は、「ヒラリーは実際には深刻な健康問題を抱えている」とするさまざまな憶測・陰謀論を列挙したもので、大変おもしろい（「影武者存在説」には”証拠写真”までついている。写真をちょっと修正すればいくらでも偽造できそうではあるが）。そうした"ヒラリー不健康陰謀論"の信奉者を俗に healther と呼ぶらしい。

この中で言及されているのが、ヒラリーが2012年に起こした脳しんとう concussion である。当時国務長官だったヒラリーは、リビアのベンガジで起きたアメリカ外交官殺害事件についての議会証言に欠席を余儀なくされたが、その際に今回紹介する表現が使われたという。ちょっと長いが引用しよう。

- The bulk of the most prominent healther conspiracies center on Clinton's December 2012 concussion, suffered after she fainted while sick with a stomach virus.
Clinton's injury caused her to postpone planned testimony on the Benghazi attack, leading right-wing skeptics to accuse the then-secretary of state of coming down with a "diplomatic illness" -- or faking it. この出来事についてさらに検索してみると、先のブッシュ政権で国連大使だったジョン・ボルトンがFOXニュースで述べた言葉だったという記事があった。

今回の表現を載せた辞書は見た範囲ではなかったが、Wikipedia には見出し項目として取り上げられていて、

と説明されていた。外交官や閣僚が、公式行事を欠席するために「体調不良」を装うことを指しているわけである。

この項目には diplomatic illness の実例があげられているが、４年前のヒラリーの出来事も、実際に体調が悪かったのにこの言葉を使われたとして記載がある（それによると、このほか "Benghazi flu" と呼んだ共和党議員もいたとのこと）。

なお「ランダムハウス英和大辞典」には a diplomatic cold という表現なら記載があったので、このようにも呼ぶらしい（訳語は「欠席の口実としての風邪」となっていて、ややわかりにくいと思った）。

ついでに一般的な「仮病」は、和英辞典を見ると feigned (pretended) illness, fake (phony) sickness; pretend to be ill, play sick などの表現が並んでいる。

締めとして、冒頭に訳語をあげた diplomatic の意味や例文も英語圏の辞書でおさえておこう。
