白熱電球 incandescent light bulb (イベント会場の火事で子どもが死亡） [日本のニュース]
この週末、東京・神宮外苑のイベントで展示物が燃え、５歳の子どもが亡くなるといういたましい出来事があった。危険物に注意するはずの会場でなぜ火事が起きたのか不思議だったが、その後、大学生が白熱電球を投光器として使っていたと報じられ、「やはりこういうことが起きてしまったか」と思った。
木くずを利用した展示物なのだから、その内部に高温になる白熱電球を置くと危ないというのは、少なくとも私の考えでは常識の範囲内のことである。しかし大学生はそうした認識がなかったらしい。生活の場で目にするのは蛍光灯あるいはLED電球ばかりになった今、私のように白熱電球に触れてヤケドをしたという経験がある人は、特に若い世代ではごく少数になっているだろう。
テクノロジーがどんどん進む一方で、古い技術をよく知らないためにトラブルが起きるケースも増えるのではないか。勤め先でアルバイトの学生と接していてそんなことをぼんやりと思ったことがあるので、今回のニュースを聞いて「やはり」と思ったのである。
このへんで英語の話に移ると、「白熱電球」を何というのか、出てこなかったので調べてみた。もちろん和英辞典で事足りるが、せっかくなのでウェブの記事から引用しよう。

実物の白熱電球と同じく、ふだんあまり目にしないという人が多そうな単語だが、語源を知れば記憶の定着に役立つかもしれない。そこで辞書を見ると、
- フランス語 incandescent またはラテン語 incandescentem より in-（強意）+-candesc（白くなる）+-ent（性質）=白熱する性質の

(名詞形 incandescence、リーダーズ英和辞典)
これだけではあまり助けになりそうにないが、「リーダーズ」の記述に従って candid の語源を見ると
- ラテン語 candius（白い；純粋な）cf. candidate, candor

- F or L candidus white; →candle

とある。「ジーニアス」の candius は candidus の誤りでは、と他の辞書の記述とも比べてみて思ったが、それはともかく、さらに candle へと転じると、

とあり、ここから光度の単位として使われている「カンデラ」 candela と関係があることがわかる。また濁らない「テ」を使う「カンテラ」（ランプ）ともつながりそうだ。
ということで、「ろうそく（キャンドル）」「カンデラ」「カンテラ」とつなげていくことで、多少なりとも「白熱灯」を覚える手助けになるかもしれない。
incandescent は、物理的に「白熱した」のほか、比喩的に「輝くようにすばらしい」「（熱意や情熱などが）燃え立つような、熱烈な」「怒りに燃えて」という意味も辞書に載っている。日本語と似ている、というより、言語が違っても人間は同じような発想をする、と考えるべきなのだろう。

ついでに、「蛍光灯」は fluorescent light で、LEDは light-emitting diode （発光ダイオード）の略である。
もうひとつおまけに、「裸電球」は naked bulb と和英辞典にあるが、bare bulb でもいいようだ。以前読んだ００７の原作「死ぬのは奴らだ」に次のような実例があった。
- Their footsteps echoed down the stone passage. At the end there was a door. They went through into another long passage lit by an occasional bare bulb in the roof. Another door and they found themselves in a large warehouse.
