showboat, grandstander 「目立ちたがり屋、スタンドプレーヤー」 [ニュースと英語]
トランプ大統領がFBIのコミー長官を突然クビにしたことが騒ぎとなっている。大統領は、「長官は目立ちたがり屋で、前から解任しようと思っていた」と説明している。英語学習の面では、showboat と grandstander という単語を印象深く覚えるのに役立ちそうな発言だ。
トランプ大統領の発言はNBCニュースとのインタビューに答えたもので、「目立ちたがり屋」は原文では次のようになっていた。

トランプ大統領は、長官解任の理由はクリントン元国務長官の私用メール問題への対応をめぐるもので、選挙戦へのロシアの介入疑惑について進められている捜査とは関係ないと主張している。そうであるなら、明らかに疑われるような行動をなぜこのタイミングで取ったのか何とも不思議で、捜査妨害が目的だという批判が出ているの当然のように思えてしまう。
