複数形の elections だからといって衆参同日選挙というわけではない

国内のある雑誌を読んでいたら、「トランプ米大統領が来日時に『貿易交渉は7月の日本の選挙の後まで待つ』とツイートした際、elections と複数形にしていた。安倍首相が衆参同日選挙に踏み切る意向を伝えたのでないか」という見方が出ていることを報じていた。

これを読んで、「あれ？単数だから参議院選挙だけ、複数なら衆議院選挙もいっしょになる、とは必ずしも言えないはずだが」といぶかしく思った。

衆・参どちらかだけであっても elections と複数形で表現できると私は覚えていた。その理屈は具体的に学んだわけではないのであくまで想像だが、国政選挙は選挙区ごとに行われる個々の選挙が集まったものなので、衆議院（あるいは参議院）ひとつであっても複数形で表現してよい、ということではないだろうか。

いっぽう視点を変えて、衆議院（あるいは参議院）というひとつの大きなまとまりとして選挙を考えれば、単数形でもかまわないことになる。

だから、単・複どちらでもいいのであって、参議院と衆議院の両方で選挙が行われるかどうかは、単数か複数かと直接関係はないはずだ。

・・・といっても私の思い込みかもしれないので、ネットで実例を調べてみた。

まずはトランプ大統領の来日時のツイートを確かめてみると、

- Much will wait until after their July elections.

と、確かに複数形だ。しかし具体的に何の選挙のことかは示されていない。

規定に従って参議院選挙は今年７月（遅くても８月初め）には必ず実施される。参議院は the House of Councilors が正式な英語名称だが、長いためか Upper House もよく使われるので、こちらで検索してみた（一般論だと複数形で表現される場合があるので、来月を含めた特定の選挙を指す例を見つけるようにした）。

すると、やはり単・複どちらの実例もあることがわかった。複数形の例をいくつか引用すると、

次の例は同一の記事にあったものだが、今年の参院選について地の部分では単数、引用された識者（外国人）は複数を使っている。

というわけで、「複数形だから同日選挙」とは限らないはずなのだ。

しかし私が読んだ雑誌だけでなく、結構いろいろなところでこの説が取り上げられているようなので、ちょっと気になってしまった。

そんなに単純ではなさそうだということは、ネットで選挙についてどのような英語が使われるのか、実例をほんの少し調べてみればわかることだと思うのだが・・・。

参議院選挙にあわせて、衆議院選挙もぶつけてくるのか。その場合は何を解散の理由（いわゆる「大義」）にするのか。そう遠くないうちに決まるはずである。
