gender reveal party 「赤ちゃんの性別おひろめパーティ」 [英語文化のトリビア]
文化や生活に根ざした言葉は他国の人には難物だ。CNNのトップページを見ていたら、炎上する車の映像に "Australian gender reveal party goes wrong" という見出しがあるのが目にとまったが、何が起きたのかよりも gender reveal party とは何だろう、という方が気になった。
クリックして記事の本文を見ると、こう始まっていた。
- A gender reveal party on Australia's Gold Coast took a dramatic turn as a car used to spew blue smoke suddenly ignited.
The Queensland Police Service released footage of the incident, which took place on April 18 last year, to warn about the dangers of 'burnouts,' an increasingly popular feature of gender reveal parties in Australia.

これだけでは gender reveal party が何なのかわからない。これに続いて

とあるのを読んで、青かピンクの煙と gender reveal の組み合わせから、これは何か男女の性別と関係があるのではないか、と想像した。
最近の言葉らしく、英和辞典はもちろん英語圏のオンライン辞書にも見当たらなかったが、Wikipedia に項目が立てられていた。
- A gender reveal party is a celebration during which parents, friends and family find out the sex of a baby. This has become possible with the increasing accuracy of various technologies of determining the baby's sex before birth. As an event distinct from a baby shower, it is a relatively new phenomenon.
Gender reveal parties are typically held near the middle of the pregnancy.

想像と違わず、赤ちゃんの性別を発表するパーティのことであった。それも生まれる前に親族友人を集めて開くものだという。

この続きの部分を読むと、病院に性別を書いた紙を封筒に入れてもらっておき、パーティで開封してカップルも初めて性別を知るようにするなど、いろいろ趣向を凝らした形で行われていることがわかった。
上記のように、３年前に書かれたこの記事には「少なくとも８年前にさかのぼる」とあるが、Wikipedia によると、このパーティはSNSの出現によって広まったもので、YouTubeに最初の動画投稿があったのは2008年だということなので、つじつまがあう。
また、今回トラブルとなった "gender reveal burnouts" は去年2018年にオーストラリアで流行るようになったもので、車の炎上事故もあって危険性が指摘されている、とも記述しているが、そこで脚注に紹介されていたのは他ならぬ上記CNNの数日前の記事だった。Wikipedia は早い。
この gender reveal party、そのうちに日本にも取り入れられるのでないだろうか。単純な性別発表パーティなら簡単に開けるはずだし、医師の協力さえ得られれば、カップルもその場で性別を知るサプライズ形式も可能だろう。
日本でも出産前に男か女かを教えてくれるのが普通になっているが、私の子供の場合は、「日本産婦人科学会では性別は出産前に教えないことになっている」として医師は明かしてくれなかった。産着は何色にするか、名前は２通り考えておく必要がある、など妻と一緒に頭を悩ませたものだった。出産時にスリル？を味わうことはできたが。
