my way or the highway 「イヤなら出ていけ！」 （トランプ、ボルトン補佐官を解任） [辞書に載っていない表現]
トランプ政権の中で強硬派として知られるボルトン補佐官が突然解任された。それを伝える記事を読んでいたら、his way or the highway という表現が目にとまったので、取り上げてみよう。
BBCニュースのウェブサイトにあった記事である。大統領ではなく、ボルトン氏の”独善”ぶりについて使われたものだ。
- A White House official told the BBC's US partner, CBS News, "Bolton has his priorities. He didn't ask the president 'What are your priorities?' They're Bolton's priorities."
A former senior administration official told CBS Mr Bolton's "his way or the highway" approach had infuriated many people inside the White House, including the president.

文脈から、「自己中心的な」とか「自分以外の考えを認めない」という意味ではなかろうかと想像したが、手持ちの辞書はもちろん英語圏のオンライン辞書を見てもなかなか見つからない。
わずかな例外は、いずれも見出しとしては my way or the highway という形で載せていた。

たいていは強い立場にある者が弱い立場にある者に対して使うということは、一種の恫喝ともいえそうな言い回しである。
ただ上記の辞書や Wikipedia には、由来が書かれていない。1970年代にさかのぼる、とは書かれているが、どのようなきっかけでこのような表現が生まれたのか。highway は my way の音にひっかけたものだろう、ということは容易に想像がつくのだが。
そう思いながら、さらにウェブ情報を調べたら、次のような記述があった。こちらは60年代に生まれたと書いている。
- My way or the highway is an idiom that originated in the United States in the 1960s. （中略）
The image is of one either conforming to expectations or driving away down the highway. （中略）
The earliest known users of the idiom my way or the highway are American football coaches, such as Vince Lombardi and Bill Parcells.

あれ、単語の韻を踏んだというより、「車に乗って立ち去る」「車が道路を走り去っていく」というイメージ、ということなのか。何となく解せない。
なお、英語の highway は、日本語の「ハイウェイ」つまり高速道路ではなく、街と街とをつなぐ「幹線道路」を指す、とはよく指摘されることである。
ところで、マスメディアの中には、ホルトン補佐官を大統領の強硬路線の象徴として、あるいはトランプの alter ego であるかのように書いていたところもあったように思うが、辞めさせられると、今度は「その強硬路線がトランプの不興を買った」などと報じられている。
トランプの言動がクルクル変わるのは確かだろうが、こちらも単純なレッテル貼りに引きずられないように注意する必要もあるのではないかと思ってしまった。
