final throes 「最後の難関」「産みの苦しみ」

前回に続いて、トランプ大統領がらみで目にとまった単語を短くメモしておきたい。トランプの英語はやさしいとよく言われるが、時には難しそうな言葉を使うこともある。少し前、中国との貿易交渉が大詰めを迎えていた時に述べた throes もそんな例と言えるだろう。

- “We’re in the final throes of a very important deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “It’s going very well.”

throe は「激痛」や「苦痛」ということだが、複数形で使われることが多いようで、「陣痛」や「断末魔」、さらには「必死の努力」という訳語が辞書に載っている。トランプ大統領が言った in the final throes は、米中の貿易合意に向けた努力が胸突き八丁の大詰めを迎えている、ということを表しているわけである。
