upholstered chair 「（布・皮）張りのイス」 [単語・表現]
本棚の整理をしながら読了済みのペーパーバックを眺めているが、そこで印をつけていた単語の紹介を続ける。upholster はイスなどにカバーやクッションをつけることを指す単語で、「布張り」とか「革張り」と言いたい場合に使うことができる。
今回も、ロバート・J・ソウヤーのSFミステリ「イリーガル・エイリアン」で拾ったものである。

手製の英語学習ファイルを見直したら、次のような実例もメモしてあった。
- Williams delivered her presentation in a small auditorium with the directors seated in rows of upholstered chairs. She began by getting right to the point, explaining the strategies she would recommend based on her findings.

- Paul was proud to point out that the Victorian clock on the mantel cost only ￡7, and the sofa and armchairs, which he had reupholstered in a bottle green velvet, cost only ￡20 together.

なお後者の bottle green は dark green 「暗緑色」のことである。
upholster の由来だが、私はてっきり拳銃を収めるホルスター holster と関係あるのだろうと思った。ところが辞書を見るとそうではなく、upholstery あるいは upholsterer からの逆成 back-formation だと書かれていた。
前者は「室内装飾業」または「カーテン、クッションなどの室内装飾品、材料」、後者は「室内装飾業者」という意味で、 upholder （廃語となっている古い言葉で、「小間物の製作者、修理人」）と関係があるのだそうだ。
そして upholster には「（部屋を）カーペットやカーテンなどで飾る」という意味もある。
ちょっとややこしくなってきたが、英語圏の辞書から定義や例文を引用しよう。
- to cover a chair or sofa with cloth or leather so that it is attractive and comfortable
(Macmillan Dictionary)
- Provide (furniture) with a soft, padded covering.
The chairs were upholstered in red velvet.
Consider replacing upholstered sofas and chairs with furniture made of leather, wood, metal or plastic.

おまけとして、unholster は載っていない辞書も多いが、動詞の holster 「銃をホルスターに収める」の反対で、「銃をホルスターから取り出す、銃を抜く」ということになる。
- Remove (a gun) from a holster.
Stepping out of the vehicle, he unholstered his gun discreetly and started walking towards the restaurant.
I start to unholster my gun, before realizing I'm still out of ammunition.
