single point of failure 「アキレス腱」

英語学習ノートを見返していたら、以前メモしていたsingle point of failure という言葉が目にとまった。その一点が故障するとシステム全体がダメになってしまう構成要素を指す。この言葉を眺めていたら、コンピューターやネットワークなどだけでなく、他の分野に使うこともできるのではないかという気がしてきた。

たとえば、新型コロナウイルス禍では物流・貿易などで中国に大きく依存していることの脆弱性が浮き彫りになった。こうした状況を表現するのに使えるのではないだろうか、そう考えて検索してみたら、案の定そうした実例が見つかった。

もう少し想像力を働かせて調べれば、さらに面白い実例が見つかるような気がする。

日本語では「単一障害点」と呼ばれているというが、英語だとどう説明できるのだろうか、英語圏の一般のオンライン辞書を調べてみたが、専門的な言葉なのか載せているものは限られていた。以下はその引用である。
