英米で意味が違う cross the aisle という表現 [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
同じ英語でもアメリカとイギリスで意味が違う言葉がある。よくあげられるのは table （議案を）「棚上げにする」と「提出する」だろうが、私の学習ノートには何かで知った cross the aisle という表現がメモしてある。なかなか実例にお目にかかることがなかったが、最近読んだ記事に、これを下敷きにしたと見られる表現が出てきたので取り上げてみたい。
cross the aisle は、アメリカでは「他の政党と政策面で協力する」、イギリスとカナダでは「他の政党に移籍する」ことを指す。英語圏のオンライン辞書には次のように説明されている。
- 1. (chiefly US, idiomatic, politics) To vote, unite, or otherwise co-operate with members of another political party in order to achieve governmental or political action.
It's voters who seem to want Republicans and Democrats in the next Congress to cross the aisle and try something different in Iraq.
2. (chiefly Britain and Canada, idiomatic, politics) Of a member of a parliament, to resign from one's political party and join another party, resulting in moving from one's currently assigned de

異なる政党のメンバーがお互いを隔てる通路を渡って歩み寄るのがアメリカ、ある政党のメンバーが通路を横切って別の政党の側に行ってしまうのがイギリス、というように考えればよさそうだ。なお aisle は発音要注意の単語だが、今でも試験や入試の問題に出てくるのだろうか。
私が今回見つけたのは、「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の記事にあったものだ。

現在、バイデン元副大統領が現職のトランプ大統領に対して優勢を保っており、実際に11月の選挙で勝利すれば、民主党はホワイトハウスと下院を制することになる。そうすれば、新型コロナウイルス禍と経済の苦況が続く中、共和党の中にも民主党に協力する動きが出てくるかもしれない。そんな見方がこうした表現で示されているわけである。
ところで、世論調査でバイデン氏がトランプ氏に大差をつけていることもあってか、反トランプで部数を伸ばしている「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」も、そうした論調の報道にますます熱が入っているように感じる。
私もトランプ大統領の言動には驚き呆れるばかりだが、その一方で、優勢とされていた民主党が実際には敗れてしまった４年前のあの番狂わせをマスメディアはもう忘れてしまったのか、大丈夫だろうか、と思うこともある。
そしてよく指摘されるように、日本国内では「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」などのトランプに批判的な視点が伝えられがちなのは否定できないように思う。そうした報道がアメリカ全体の動向を反映しているといえるのか、トランプの好き嫌いとは別に、こちらも一歩引いて冷静に受け取る必要があるだろう。
