tough love「愛のムチ」 [単語・表現]
前回の poster boy で掲げた実例に出てきた AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) という団体については、以前取り上げたことがあると書いたが、そこから連想した tough love という表現を取り上げたい。
家族や友人の自立更生をうながすために、あえて取る厳しい態度を指す言葉である。
tough な love とは矛盾する oxymoronic な感じがするのがおもしろい。英和辞典には「愛のムチ」という訳語が載っていて、なるほど、と思った。
AA が支援の手を差し伸べるアルコール依存症、あるいは麻薬中毒の克服などによく使われるようだ。
以前取り上げた本である、ジョージ・ハリスンとエリック・クラプトンにとってのミューズだったパティ・ボイドの自伝で拾った実例を引用しよう。
- In AA terminology, it was "tough love": giving up on someone you love so that they have to face what they are: while you're with them, however bad the relationship, a little part of them says they must be okay because you're still there, still with them.
