best of bad options「ダメな中でも一番まし」 [単語・表現]
このところ「ひどい中でもまし」であることを示す表現を続けているが、私の学習ノートには the best of bad options という言い方を使った実例がメモしてあり、これまた「まし」に相当する英語といえそうだ。
日本の安倍首相（当時）について書いた「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の記事で見つけたものである。
- He was the seventh prime minister in seven years, and at the time of his elevation, just a year after what was seen as a bungled government response to the Fukushima disaster, he was considered the best of a bunch of bad options. But he exceeded expectations, managing to lead the economy into a period of modest and relatively steady expansion, presiding over a winning Olympic bid, and skillfully finessing mercurial relationship with both Mr. Xi and Mr. Trump.

ネットで検索して他の実例を探してみた。option ではなく choice が使われたものもある。

- Bombing could, however, by beheading IS and showing its apocalyptic ideology to be the far-fetched nonsense it is, reduce that threat. For that reason only, I think that Britain joining in the bombing is the best of a very bad choice. But Mr Cameron needs to have fully thought-out strategies for dealing with all the ways this could go wrong.

次はある記事につけられたコメントにあったもので、前回の the least worst option と組み合わせた形になっている。
- Drugs will never be legalized because they are the classic example of the best of bad options. People don’t like the least worst option.

ということで、先日来取り上げてきた言い回しは、less, least, worst, bad, best と、似ていたり真逆だったりする単語が使われているが、組み合わせによって、どれも「まし」を表すのがおもしろいところだ。
